- Pop. 6,277. In Kincardine T., Bruce C., on L. Huron at the mouth of the Penetangore R. and Hwys 9 & 21,80 km SW of Owen Sound and 52 km N of Goderich.
- The first settlers landed from a schooner in 1848, and by the following year a mill was in operation. The community was first called Penetangore after the river.
- In 1857 the name was changed to that of the township in which it was located and which honoured James Bruce, Earl of Elgin and Kincardine and governor-general of the Province of Canada 1847-1854.
