- Pop. 3,151. In the Reg. Mun. of Waterloo on the Nith R. and C. Rds. 49 & SO, 16 km SW of Cambridge.
- Settled in 1824 when Abel Mudge built a saw and gristmill on Smith's Cr., now called the Nith R. First called Mudge Hollow, then Mudge's Mills, and later Nithvale.
- . In 1840, store owner Robert Wyllie established a post office. The fIrst postmaster, James Jackson, renamed the community Ayr after a town in his native Ayrshire, Scotland, now part of Strathclyde.
