Description From Owner:
- Pop. 4,300. Part of the Town of Rays ide-Balfour, Reg. Mun. of Sudbury lID C. Rd. 35, 9 km NW of Sudbury.
- CPR construction worker Joseph Belanger was the fIrst settler in the area, around 1880.
- His bride, the former Azilda Brisbois, 80 impressed township residents that they asked authorities to name the post office Ste-Azilda in her honour.
- In 1891 the post office was established under that name. When it was learned there was no such saint, the post office changed the name to Rayside, in 1900, after the township.
- Residents succeeded in having the name Ste. Azilda reinstated the following year, but the Ste. was dropped a few months later.
