- The community was settled in the early 1800s by United Empire Loyalists and immigrants from England and Scotland. Early businesses were grist, carding and flour mills, a tannery, distillery, shingle mill, blacksmith shop and axe factory.
- The community was likely named after a town in Ireland's County Cork, or the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland.
