Description From Owner:
- Pop. 1,158. In North Himsworth T., Parry Sound Dist., on the E end ofL. Nipissing, 11 km SE of North Bay.
- The first settlers were lumbermen from nearby Wasi Falls just south of the village.
- A post office was opened in 1881, and George Morrison, the first settler and the postmaster, suggested the name of Callander, his hometown in Scotland.
- In 1934 the Dionne quintuplets were born in a farmhouse near Callander, delivered by Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe.
- News of the multiple birth reached the world when the father, Elzire Dionne, went to the North Bay Daily Nugget to place five separate birth notices.
- A plaque at a lookout over L. Nipissing, 1.5 km S of Callander, explains the creation of the lake.
- When glacial ice began to retreat, about 9000 BC, the Nipissing Basin formed an eastern extension of Georgian Bay and drained into the Ottawa and Mattawa Rs.
- With the gradual tilting of the land, the lake began to drain westward about 7,000 years later, creating the French River.
