Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 219. In Greenock T., Bruce C., on the Teeswater R. and C. Rd. 31, 16 km. NW of Walkerton.
  • Pioneer Irish settler John Phelan built a dam and sawmill. In 1865 he and other Irish settlers petitioned the government for a post office, requesting the name Emmett after the Irish patriot hanged for rebellion in 1803.
  • Someone in the post office department with a knowledge of Irish history and a sense of irony, changed the name to Chepstow when the post office was established in 1865.
  • Chepstow was the birthplace of Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (1130-1176) known as Strongbow. He was the first invader of Ireland in 1171 and was subsequently granted the entire island.
