- The place was founded in 1834 by John CeCewwho had been forced to move after the flrst WeIland Ship Canal cut off the water supply to his mill on Beaver Dams Creek, near St. Catharines.
- (It was to John DeCew's house at the falls on Beaver Dams Cr. that heroine Laura Secord walked from Queenston to warn Lt. James Fitzgibbon of an impending American attack).
