Description From Owner:
- Pop. 100. In Douro T., Peterborough C. on C. Rd. 8, 17 Ian NE of Peterborough. This area was settled in the 1820s by Irish immigrants and the township was named in 1823.
- When the post office opened in 1856 the community took its name from the T. that had been named, likely by Lt.-Gov. Sir Peregrine Maitland, after the Duke of Wellington, one of whose titles was Baron Douro.
- The Duke acquired the title after a victory over French forces when he crossed the Rio Douro at Oporto during the Peninsular War, and drove them from Portugal.
