Description From Owner:

  • Pop. 366. In Ennismore T., Peterborough C., between Pigeon and Chemong Ls. on C. Rd. 16, 14 km. NW of Peterborough.
  • Irish immigrants settled the community in 1825. The soil was fertile, but crops had to be hauled a considerable distance around the bottom oflong and narrow Chemong L. to reach the mills at Scott's Plains (Peterborough.)
  • This caused some settlers to move elsewhere until steamboat service was established. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to build a bridge across the lake and in 1844 the District Council inaugurated ferry service between Galt's Landing in Ennismore
  • and Edmison's Landing in Smith T.
  • Tolls were charged, but the service finally proved too expensive to maintain. In 1854 a stock company was formed to build a gravel road between Peterborough and Bobcaygeon with the intention of crossing Chemung L. into Ennismore at Bridgenorth.
  • In 1869 William Trennum was given the contract to build a floating bridge. When it was towed into place it was the world's longest floating bridge.
  • In 1855 the township passed a bylaw that discontinued the granting of tavern licenses in order not to 'establish, by law, schools of vice and iniquity.'
  • Ennismore took its name from the township which was named for William Hare, Viscount Ennismore, Earl of List owe I in County Kerry, Ireland.
  • For many years the community was known as The Cross because it was at the intersection of two main roads.
  • From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
