- The township was settled in 1840 and in 1851 was known as the Gore of Yonge.
- . It was also called Springfield and Waterton Hamlet before being named Escott after the residence of the Yonge family in Devon, England.
- Miss Amelia Y onge, daughter of Sir William Yonge of Escott, became the second wife of Sir Edward Lloyd, Secretary of War, who died in 1875.
