- Pop. 11,495. In Caradoc T., Middlesex C., on the SydenhamR. and C. Rds. 9, 19,39 & 81, 32 km W of London.
- A sawmill was built here as early as 1832, but the townsite was not laid out until 1850.
- The place was first known as Strath Valley, or Red Valley. In 1832 John Stewart Buchanan acquired the mill site and named the place after his hometown of Strathroy in County Tyrone, a small Irish seaport.
- Edward Blake (1833-1912), born near Strathroy, was premier of Ontario 1871-1872.
- He later held several posts in the federal government. Strathroy native Gen. Sir Arthur William Currie (1875-1933) was one of Canada's most distinguished military figures.
- He saw action throughout the First World War and in 1917 was appointed commander-in-chief of the Canadian Corps in Europe. The frrst Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal was George Orton who was the world's premier track runner in the 1890s.
- When he won his gold medal in the 2,500-metre steeplechase at the first modem Olympics in 1895, however, he was competing for the American team; Canada did not send an Olympic team that year.
