- Pop. 1,274. In Wellesley T., Reg. Mun. of Waterloo, on the Nith R. and C. Rds. 5 & 12, 29 km. W of Kitchener.
- The community was first called Smithville after John Smith, a squatter who settled in the area some time before the township was surveyed in 1842, and built the first sawmill.
- When the post office was established in 1851, the community was named Wellesley after the township. The township had been named for Richard Wellesley (1760-1842), 2nd Earl of Mornington and Baron Wellesley, brother of the Duke of Wellington.
