Description From Owner:
- Pop. 226. In Usborne T., Huron C., and Blanshard T., Perth C., on Hwy 23 and C. Rds. 6 & 8, 27 km SW of Stratford.
- The region was surveyed in the early 1830s by the Canada Company and settled by the Kirk, Hazlewood, and Hanna families. When the post office was opened in 1856, the community was named Kirkton, likely after the Kirk family.
- In the 1860s, Timothy Eaton (1834-1907) operated dry goods stores in Kirkton and nearby St. Marys. He moved to Toronto in 1869 and opened a store that used a cash system instead of barter and credit; the rest is North American merchandising history.
- From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
