• Pop. 2,456. In Douro T., Peterborough C., on the Otonabee R. just below Katchewanooka L. and Hwy 28 and C. Rds. 18 & 32, 13 km. N of Peterborough.
• One of the fIrst settlers, in 1831, was half-pay British army officer Col. Samuel Strickland who directed the laying out of a road along the Otonabee R.
• (Half-pay officers received half pay as pensions because they had been wounded or because they remained available for recall to active service).
• Strickland was joined by two sisters, Catherine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie, each of whom had married half-pay officers.
• Strickland wrote a book titled Twenty-seven Years in Canada; his sister, Catherine, wrote Backwoods of Canada, and their sister Susanna wrote Roughing it in The Bush.
• The three books are considered to be important Canadian literature. The place was fIrst called Nelson's Falls after John Nelson who had settled in the area in 1819, and later Thompson's Rapids, Herriot's Falls, North Douro, and Selby.
• In 1875 the post office opened as LakefIeld, reflective of the area's topography. Lakefield Preparatory School is a private school for boys whose pupils have included HRH Prince Andrew.
• Novelist and children's book author Margaret Laurence (1926-1987) did much of her work here.
