Description From Owner:
- Pop. 1,084. In Hearst T., Timiskaming Dist., on the NW shore of Larder L. and Hwys 66 & 624, 29 km E of Kirkland Lake.
- The community was settled in 1906 after a First Nations Peoples member staked a gold claim beside the lake. A gold rush began, and within months 4,000 claims had been staked.
- The community was named after the lake. Larder is a First Nations Peoples word meaning 'stockpile,' and the lake, which abounded in fish, could always be relied upon to provide food.
- The lake is only 11 km by 5 km, and a commercial fishery in the 1920s soon depleted the fish stock.
- From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
