- In 1674 a large tract of land along the Ottawa R. was granted as a seigneury to Francois Prevost, mayor of the town of Quebec.
- It became known as the Longueuil Seigneury when it passed to Paul Joseph LeMoyne de Longueuil in 1778 upon his marriage to the heiress of the seigneury.
- In 1796 Longueuil sold the property to New York land speculator Nathaniel Hazard Treadwell. Settlement of the area started in 1798 when Treadwell erected saw- and grist mills on Mill Cr. and built roads.
- The place was named after Pointe-a-I'Orignal, a river crossing for elk. (The translation of 'orignaf' in Canada is 'elk though elsewhere it means ''moose.'')
- The name of this settlement was often misspelled. For a tune even the post office cancelled letters as Original. A
- A courthouse, designed in the United Empire Loyalist neoclassical style and completed in 1824, is the oldest remaining courthouse in Ontario.
