Description From Owner:

  • Home of the Big A Brand apples. Growers and Packers of high quality fruit, the FRUIT MARKET offers superior product to the public.
  • The Knights farm is located 120km East of Toronto, nestled within the scenic hillsides of Nothumberland County. It's excellent proximity to Lake Ontario ensures that the cool deep water regulates summer and winter temperatures.
  • Cool night breezes coming off the water provide excellent colour and firmness to Knights apples, making them some of the Best apples in North America. Knight's uses the Big A Brand name to market their apples.
  • Knights Appleden has over 500 acres of orchard, that only accounts for about 15% of their business. There is 25,000 bushels of controlled atmosphere on site storage at Knights using state of the art nitrogen generation and automated monitoring.
  • The packing plant capacity is 4,000 boxes per day, it monitors colour and has a size grader. Knights also has their own fleet of air ride refrigerated commercial vehicles to ensure the product maintains it's freshness, and is delivered safely.
  • Big A Brand's quality control begins in the field with an irrigated pest management system. The different types of soil in the area are graded for specific apple growth.
  • For instance heavy clay loam soil which stays cooler is excellent for Macintosh apples, and lighter sandier soil is better for larger apples such as Red Delicious . They also purchase apples from several local growers in the area.
  • They use a team of field managers to ensure only quality fruit is used for the Big A Brand apple. In fact every load of fruit is inspected when it arrives at the plant to be stored, and when it is shipped out to be sold.
