Description From Owner:
- Pop. 14,540. Part of the City of Mississauga in the Reg. Mun. of Peel, on L. Ontario at the mouth of the Credit R and the QEW and Hwy 10, 6 km W of Toronto.
- The place was established in 1791 by Col. John Graves Simcoe who suggested the erection of an inn, which was built in 1798. Little settlement followed until the 1817-22 period.
- The name, first given to the river, harks back to early fur-trading days when British traders, meeting with First Nations Peoples at the mouth of the river each spring, extended credit for supplies until the following spring if the First Nations Peoples
- did not have sufficient furs to pay in full. The place was first known as Mouth of the Credit. The post office opened as Port Credit in 1842.
- From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
