Description From Owner:
- Pop. 2,191. In the Reg. Mun. of Ottawa-Carleton. A residential suburb of Ottawa on a height of land overlooking the Ottawa R. north of the City of Vanier.
- The area was first known as McKay's Bush and was part of an extensive land grant made in 1832 to Rideau Canal contractor Thomas McKay.
- In 1838 McKay built a mansion he called Rideau Hall, which since 1865 has been the residence of the governor general of Canada.
- In 1925 the community was incorporated as a village and named Rockliffe Park after the local landscape.
- It is one of the most exclusive residential areas in Canada; there are only 24 km. (15 mi) of roads, no industry, no commerce, no churches, and no apartments.
- During regional municipal restructuring in the 1960s and 1970s Rockcliffe Park was the only municipality to retain its village status within a regional municipality.
- From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
