- Pop. 2,420. In East Zorra-Tavistock T., Oxford C., on C. Rds. 24, 26,59 & 107, 15 km SE of Stratford.
- Capt. Henry Eckstein settled nearby in 1845, and in 1848, when he learned that a railway line was likely to come through the area, he moved to the present site of Tavistock so his home would be near the railway station.
- Nine years after he moved, the Buffalo and Lake Huron Railway fmally arrived. Eckstein called the community Freiburg after his hometown in Germany, and it was later called Inkerman after that famous battle in the Crimean War.
- When the post office opened in 1857, the village was given its present name by postal authorities. Tavistock is a town in Devon, England.
