Description From Owner:
- Pop. 8,000. In the Reg. Mun. of Hamilton-Wentworth on Grindstone Cr. and Hwy 5,8 km N of Hamilton.
- Alexander McDonnell was the first to own land at the site, having been given a land grant in 1796.
- When he failed to develop his holding, the land was granted in 1805 to Alexander Brown, a former officer of the North West Company.
- Brown built the first mill at Great Falls on Grindstone Cr., and his sons later constructed Brown's Wharf on nearby L. Ontario. The post office was established in 1840.
- Mill builder Henry Van Wagner is said to have named the community Waterdown because of the waters of Grindstone Cr. which rush down from the Niagara Escarpment at Great Falls.
- From Ontario Place Names 2007 David E. Scott Ph. 866 471 4123 or 905 680 7884
