- In Peterborough C., on the SW shore of Stony L., 1 km E of Hwy. 28, 24 km NE of Peterborough.
- In 1895, the lakes of the Trent Canal system from Stony L., in the E to Balsam L., in the W, were given the name Kawatba by Martha Whetung.
- She lived on the Curve Lake Indian Reserve and explained the name meant 'land of reflections.'
- Promoters subsequently changed the name to Kawartha and said the name stood for 'bright waters and happy lands.'
