Description From Owner:
- Pop. 360. In Haldimand T., Northumberland C., on C. Rd. 2 near L. Ontario, 12 km E of Cobourg. The hamlet was settled by United Empire Loyalists from Vermont and Massachusetts around 1798.
- It was called Newcastle when the post office opened in 1814. In 1832 the name was changed to Haldimand, and in 1858 it was changed again to Grafton after a town in Massachusetts.
- During the War of 1812, the home of the fIrst settler, Eliakim Barnum, was accidentally burned by British troops.
- Barnum rebuilt his house on the same site and today the building, now a museum, is one of Ontario's finest remaining examples of Loyalist-style architecture.
