Pop. 4,389. In Freeborn & Schwenger Ts., Rainy R. Dist., on the AtikokanR. And Hwys IIB&622, 3 kmN ofHwy 11,208 km W of Thunder Bay.
The fIrst settlers were prospector Tom Rawn and his wife, who arrived by canoe in 1899 and the following year built the Pioneer Hotel on the site of the present Atikokan Hotel.
As early as 1897 it was believed that a substantial body of iron ore lay beneath the waters of Steep Rock L., but it was not until 1938 that ore was actually discovered.
Mining began six years later, and over the following 20 years more than 36 million tons (32.652 million tonnes) of ore were mined.
The town's name is derived from an Ojibwa word that means 'caribou bones.' The highest recorded temperature in Ontario was 42.2 degrees Celsius (108 F.) in Atikokan and Fort Frances on July 11, 12 and 13 in 1936.
