- The community originated as a stopover point on the Opeongo Colonization Rd., which was largely completed by 1854.
- The settlement, first named Barry's Camp on the Bay, Polish immigrants who arrived in the 1870s, drawn by the lumbering industry.
- The post office was named Barry's Bay when it opened in 1876. Today the pretty village is the main shopping and outfitting centre for the Madawaska Valley tourist region.
