- Pop. 2,575. In Verulam T., Victoria C., on three islands formed by the Little Bob and Big Bob Rivers and the Trent Canal at the junction of Pigeon and Sturgeon Lakes and C. Rds. 8, 17,24 & 36, 37 km NE of Lindsay.
- The community was founded as a mill centre in 1832 by Thomas Need, who had been given 400 acres (162 ha) of government land on which to build a saw- and grist mill for the township.
- The name derives from the First Nations Peoples name Bob-caje-won-unk, meaning 'shallow rapids.'
- A lock in the town centre was built in 1833 to connect Pigeon and Sturgeon Lakes, in the Trent Canal system. The town now is the hub of the Kawartha Region, which thrives on summer tourism.
