  • Allanburg, Ontario is a small community within the City of Thorold, Ontario. It is located along the Welland Canal. Hwy 20 bisects the community with a lift bridge, known locally as the Allanburg Bridge.
  • The original sod-turning ceremony for the construction of the First Welland Canal took place in the area on November 30, 1824. Today, a cairn at the west approach to the lift bridge commemorates the event. (
  • Pop. 486. Part of the City of Thorold, Reg. Mun. of Niagara, on the WeIland Canal and C. Rd. 20, 10 km. W of Niagara Falls.
  • The place was first called New Holland because of the many Dutch and German United Empire Loyalist settlers.
  • A village was laid out in 1832 by Samuel Keefer and originally named Allanburgh to honour two men: William Allan, a Toronto banker who was vice-president of the Canal Company, and John Vanderburgh, the first settler.
  • In 1887 the post office changed the name to Allanburg.
  • A tornado swept through the Niagara Peninsula in 1996 and trashed the big screen at the Can-View drive-in theatre just W of Allanburg.
  • The twister hit before dark so nobody was injured when the screen came down. The drive-in was to have shown the movie Twister that evening.
