Description From Owner:
- Pop. 200. Part of the Town of Whitby, Reg. Mun. of Durham, on C. Rd. 5, 17 km. NW of Whitby.
- One of the early settlers, in 1832, was Richard Butler, sergeant ofa troop in the Rebellion of 1837, who owned a large tract of land, and after whom the community was first named Butler's Corners.
- When a post office was approved in 1852, community resident David Bowler proposed the name Ashbourne after his hometown in England.
- The name was approved but the post office sent out a cancellation hammer with the name Ashburn on it. The error was never corrected.
