Pop. 200. Part of the Town of Whitby, Reg. Mun. of Durham, on C. Rd. 5, 17 km. NW of Whitby.
One of the early settlers, in 1832, was Richard Butler, sergeant ofa troop in the Rebellion of 1837, who owned a large tract of land, and after whom the community was first named Butler's Corners.
When a post office was approved in 1852, community resident David Bowler proposed the name Ashbourne after his hometown in England.
The name was approved but the post office sent out a cancellation hammer with the name Ashburn on it. The error was never corrected.
