- Pop. 100. On the border of Lanark C. and Ottawa-Carleton Reg. and the Jock R., 3 kIn SW ofC. Rd. 3, 8 km. NE of Carleton Place. The place was first called Sumner's Corners after early settler John Sumner and later, Mount Pleasant.
- The name had to be changed because there was another Mount Pleasant, so in 1851 Sumner chose Ashton after Ashton-under-Lyne, a suburb of Manchester, England.
