Pop. 100. On the border of Lanark C. and Ottawa-Carleton Reg. and the Jock R., 3 kIn SW ofC. Rd. 3, 8 km. NE of Carleton Place. The place was first called Sumner's Corners after early settler John Sumner and later, Mount Pleasant.
The name had to be changed because there was another Mount Pleasant, so in 1851 Sumner chose Ashton after Ashton-under-Lyne, a suburb of Manchester, England.
