- Pop. 555. In Roxborough T., Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Cs., on the Payne R., and C. Rds. 15 & 43, 26 km NW of Cornwall.
- In 1842 the very versatile John Hough settled. Hough built the fIrst sawmill, kept a store, built houses, acted as the local preacher, blacksmith, magistrate and doctor, and also manufactured coffins.
- The place was fIrst known as Hough Mills. When the post office was established in 1864 the community was renamed Avonmore after a river in County Wicklow, Ireland.
