Pop. 555. In Roxborough T., Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Cs., on the Payne R., and C. Rds. 15 & 43, 26 km NW of Cornwall.
In 1842 the very versatile John Hough settled. Hough built the fIrst sawmill, kept a store, built houses, acted as the local preacher, blacksmith, magistrate and doctor, and also manufactured coffins.
The place was fIrst known as Hough Mills. When the post office was established in 1864 the community was renamed Avonmore after a river in County Wicklow, Ireland.
