Description From Owner:
- Pop. 320. In Essa T., Simcoe C., onC. Rd. 21,just EofC. Rd. 10,28 km. SW of Barrie.
- The first settlers called the community Cob Coy, a corruption of the French for 'cabreeho,' a French word to describe a building on posts with a roof, but no sides, in which to keep hay dry.
- Early visitors to the settlement mispronounced the word Cob Coy, which became a local joke and in time, the community's name. When an official name was required by the post office in the 1880s, the place was named Essa Centre.
- This was often confused with Essex Centre, and postmaster Jeremiah Baxter Coulson had the name changed in 1890, honouring his mother's maiden name.
