Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 875. In West Oxford and North Oxford Ts., Oxford C., on the Thames R. and C. Rd. 9, 6 km. SW of Woodstock.
  • The first settler was John Carroll, who came from New Jersey in 1784. Beachville was named by its fIrst postmaster, William Merigold, in 1832, to honour Andrew Beach, owner of the fIrst grist mill.
  • Beachville proudly claims to be 'Home of Baseball' because the fIrst recorded game of baseball took place here a year before Abner Doubleday 'invented' the game in Cooperstown, NY.
  • The game, on June 4, 1838, is described in detail in a letter written by Dr. Adam Ford of Denver, CO., who grew up in St. Marys and was among spectators at the game.
  • His original letter is in Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame, but officials there have never formally recognized Beachville's claim.
  • (Information on the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is found under the listing for St. Marys).
