- Pop. 2,018. In Brock T., Reg. Mun. of Durham, on the Beaverton R. and on C. Rd. 12 between Hwy 7 & 12 & C. Rd. 2, 58 km. NW of Oshawa.
- Joel Horner settled in 1827 and built the fIrst saw- and grist mill. In 1833 the McCaskill brothers acquired the mill and the community became known as McCaskill's Mills.
- When the post office opened in 1849, the community was called Cannington to honour British foreign secretary George Canning.
- Artist Robert Holmes was born in Cannington in 1861. He was an expert watercolourlst and specialized in painting wildflowers. His work hangs in the National Gallery and Art Gallery of Ontario.
