- Pop. 1,781. In Elderslie T., Bruce C., on the North Br. of the Saugeen R. and C. Rd. 19,26 km. N of Walkerton.
- The first settlers, in 1854, were Scots, and the place was known as Sconeville until 1868 when the post office named it Chesley without consulting the residents.
- Chesley was named after Solomon Yeomans Chesley, an official in the Indian Office at Ottawa who was the Indian agent at S1, Regis Indian Reserve near Cornwall (1820-1845.)
- Adam Scott Elliot was the founder of the settlement. In 1888 most of Chesley was destroyed by fire.
