- The settlement's original name until the 1850s was Crundell's Corners and then it became Northumberland after England's northernmost county, and later, Newcastle.
- . 'Village' was added to differentiate it from the Town of Newcastle. In 1993 under Regional Government, the area was named Clarington -- from the 'Clar' of Clarke T. and the 'ington' of Darlington.
