Description From Owner:
- Pop. 895. In Ross T., Renfrew C., at the Send of Muskrat L. and Hwy 17 and C. Rds. 7 & 8, 125 km. NW of Ottawa.
- French explorer Samuel de Champlain travelled through the area in 1613 and lost his astrolabe. In 1867 an astrolabe bearing the date 1603 was found near Cobden.
- There was a small settlement oflumbermen on the site in the 1820s, but Jason Gould, who arrived in 1849, is considered the founder.
- He cleared a road from the Ottawa R. to the southern tip of Muskrat L. and established a steamship line up the lake and the Muskrat R. to Pembroke, by-passing unnavigable rapids in the Ottawa R.
- When a post office was opened in 1851, Gould was asked to choose the name.
- He sugg¬ested Cobden to honour Richard Cobden (1804-1865) a British statesman he admired who had been instrumental in having the Com Laws repealed in England in the I 840s.
