Pop. 895. In Ross T., Renfrew C., at the Send of Muskrat L. and Hwy 17 and C. Rds. 7 & 8, 125 km. NW of Ottawa.
French explorer Samuel de Champlain travelled through the area in 1613 and lost his astrolabe. In 1867 an astrolabe bearing the date 1603 was found near Cobden.
There was a small settlement oflumbermen on the site in the 1820s, but Jason Gould, who arrived in 1849, is considered the founder.
He cleared a road from the Ottawa R. to the southern tip of Muskrat L. and established a steamship line up the lake and the Muskrat R. to Pembroke, by-passing unnavigable rapids in the Ottawa R.
When a post office was opened in 1851, Gould was asked to choose the name.
He sugg¬ested Cobden to honour Richard Cobden (1804-1865) a British statesman he admired who had been instrumental in having the Com Laws repealed in England in the I 840s.
