Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 6,321. Part of the Town of Fort Erie, Reg. Mun. of Niagara, on L. Erie, 16 km. SW of Fort Erie.
  • In its heyday, the resort designed for Americans from nearby Buffalo, was nicknamed the 'Atlantic City of the Great Lakes.'
  • In the early part of the 20th century, two of the finest steam vessels of their class ferried holidayers from Buffalo to the amusement park. The community was settled in the 1780s and farmed by United Empire Loyalists.
  • It was named for the clear waters at the beach. In 1814, a small British fleet masquerading as supply craft embarked from Crystal Beach and captured two armed American schooners.
  • This daring exploit was the last naval battle on the Great Lakes in the War of 1812. A summer post office was opened in 1896, a year-round office opened in 1908.
