Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 95. In Bastard and South Burgess Ts., Leeds and Grenville Cs., on the SW shore of Upper Beverly L. and C. Rd. 42, 37 km. W of Brockville.
  • Abel Stevens, a United Empire Loyalist from Vermont, was granted land in the 1790s in the Beverly Lakes watershed and brought settlers into the area before the township was surveyed in 1796.
  • For a time the settlement was known as Stevenstown, but by 1809 Stevens was operating a grist mill, and the place was called Stone Mills. Later the community was named Beverley after Chief Justice Sir John Beverley Robinson.
  • When the post office opened in 1857 the name had to be changed because there already was a Beverley in Ontario. The name Delta was chosen because of its location between the two lakes.
  • Dr. Lome Pierce (1890-1961), born in Delta, was editor of The Ryerson Press 1920-1960. He established an excellent collection of Canadian literature at Queen's University.
