- Pop. 7,497. In the Reg. Mun. of Waterloo on C. Rds. 21 & 86,19 km. NW of Kitchener. First known as Bristow's Corners for Englishmen John and Edward Bristow, who settled in 1835.
- The post office opened in 1849 as West Woolwich, but the name was changed to Elmira in 1867 after the city in New York State.
- Toward the end of the 19th century, many German and Pennsylvania Dutch settlers arrived, some of them old-order Mennonites whose descendants still shun modem inventions such as automobiles.
- The numerous black, horse-drawn buggies and their passengers wearing traditional Mennonite clothing, attract many tourists.
