133 Barber St. |
Ontario Tourism Region : Northeastern Ontario
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 5,600. In Merritt T., Sudbury Dist., on the Spanish R. and Hwy 6,70 km SW of Sudbury.
- The name derives from Espanola, meaning Little Spain, or the English pronunciation of the French word for Spain -- Espagne.
- The community came into being in 1899, when the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company built a dam and mill at the site and the place was first known as Spanish.
- At the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the mill closed and the place became a virtual ghost town. During the Second World War, the mill was used as a camp for prisoners of war.
- After the war the mill was bought by an American company, which modernized it and began producing paper products.
