- Pop. 216. In Grey T., Huron C. on the Middle Maitland R. and C. Rd. 19,19 km W of Listowel.
- In 1862 the place was called Carter's Hamlet and the following year a post office opened operated by Johnathan Carter.
- By 1873 the village had a grist mill, sawmill and pottery and a population of about 80. Ethel is believed to have been the name of the wife of the man who brought the CNR line through the community.
