- Pop. 168. In Artemesia T., Grey C., on the W shore of Eugenia L., head of the Beaver R. and C. Rd. 13, 53 km SE of Owen Sound. In
- . In the 1850s a deer hunter was reported to have found gold in the rocks near a 70-foot (23 m) waterfall. The stampede was on, but the 'gold' turned out to be iron pyrites, also known as 'fool's gold.'
- Some of the would-be miners stayed on to try farming, and government surveyors laid out a village site.
- A French ex-soldier who was a member of the survey party suggested naming the place Eugenia after the Empress Eugenia, wife of Napoleon III. When the post office was established in 1862 it took that name.
