Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 441. In Finch T., Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Cs., on the Payne R. and C. Rds. 12 & 43, 30 km. NW of Cornwall.
  • In 1802, Allan McMillan, living in the County of Invemesshire in Scotland, saw a map of Finch T. and chartered a ship, the cost being met by each passenger from the McMillan and Cameron families paying £ 10.
  • After a 13 -week crossing, the ship reached Montreal in the autumn. The families then walked to the settlements of Kirkhill and Laggan in Lochiel T.
  • The next spring, four members of each family walked to Finch, selected their lots, built log houses, and then brought their families to their new homes.
  • Unlike settlers along the St. Lawrence, they received no rations or supplies for three years, and the land clearing was done without horses.
  • Their group contained no half-pay army officers; what income they raised came from selling potash and oak barrel staves.
  • (Half-pay officers received half pay as pensions because they had been wounded or because they remained available for recall to active service.)
  • The community took its name from the township, which was named in honour of Lady Elizabeth Finch, a relative of David Murray, Viscount Stormont of Perth, Scotland.
