Ontario Tourism Region : Northeastern Ontario
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 381. In Foleyet T., Dist. of Sudbury, on the Ivanhoe R., the CNR and Hwy 101,98 km SW of Timmins.
- The settlement began when the Canadian Northern Railway established a divisional point at that location around 1912. Timothy Foley was a contractor on the railway, and Sir Donald Mann, a railway builder, wanted to name the new station after Foley.
- When Mann learned that name had already been given to another station, he replied, 'I'll name that place Foley yet!'
- And the name survived. Floods in 1918 and 1960 caused extensive damage to the community, so in 1962 a concrete dam was built on the Ivanhoe R. to prevent more such disasters.
