Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 600. In the estuary of the Albany R. on the W shore of James Bay, 131 km by air NW of Moose Factory.
  • Trading was begun by Charles Bayly in 1675, and the frrst Hudson's Bay Company trading post was built about 1679 on Bayly I. in the river's mouth.
  • . In 1684 the post was moved to the south bank of the river and then to Albany I. Albany was seized by a French force under Pierre Chevalier de Troyes in 1686 and renamed Fort Ste. Anne.
  • An attempt to re-establish the post in 1688 was defeated by the French, but it was recaptured by the English in 1693.
  • Between the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) and the Treaty of I Utrecht (1713) it was the only Hudson's Bay Company post on Hudson or James Bays.
  • The Albany R. from which the fort takes its name was named by the Hudson's Bay Company after the Duke of York and Albany who became King James II in 1685.
