- Pop. 339. In FenwickT., Algoma Dist., at the mouth of the Goulais R., at L. Superior and the W. terminus ofHwy 552, 40 km N of Sault Ste. Marie.
- The farming community was founded in 1882 and in 1890 a timber bridge was completed across the Goulais R. The community was first known as Aupaqua Town Plot and for a time was called Kirby's Corners after early farmers Bert and Harold Kirby.
- The post office was established in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The origin of Gou1ais may have been a corruption of the French word goulet, meaning narrow passage, because the river is narrow at its mouth.
- The Goulais Indian Reserve, established in the 1850s, is 28 km W on Hwy 552.
