  • Pop. 105. In Scugog T., Reg. Mun. of Durham on Hwys 7 & 12,34 km. N of Whitby.
  • The first settler was E. Bassingthwait who came from Lincolnshire, England, in 1832.
  • The place for decades was known as Smithtown, the name painted in large letters on the first hotel, owned by Richard Smith.
  • In 1855 the post office opened as Greenbank after Mr. Bassingthwait's hometown.
