Pop. 105. In Scugog T., Reg. Mun. of Durham on Hwys 7 & 12,34 km. N of Whitby.
The first settler was E. Bassingthwait who came from Lincolnshire, England, in 1832.
The place for decades was known as Smithtown, the name painted in large letters on the first hotel, owned by Richard Smith.
In 1855 the post office opened as Greenbank after Mr. Bassingthwait's hometown.
