The place was first known as Stepney. The first reference to the name Green Lane was in 1953. The history of the community and the origin of its name have not been recorded.

Thank you for all the information provided, I would like to add that Stepney had a post office from 1904 december 1 to december 13, 1914. I believe it was located on Highway 34 and not 35. much appreciated seeing all the small villages that had post offices in the area as I am a Vankleek Hill postal history collector.
